Sip, Stroll, and Stay: Discover Carlton with The Dundee Hotel’s Walking Wine Tasting Package

One of the greatest joys of visiting Oregon Wine Country is that given the range of wines available, it remains easily accessible. The quality of wine is world-class, but the spirit of the region is relaxed, welcoming, and refreshingly unpretentious. And while Dundee will always be at the heart of the hotel, no trip to the Willamette Valley would be complete without exploring our incredible neighbors. Today we’re spotlighting a package that highlights the charming town of Carlton, less than a 20-minute drive from The Dundee Hotel. Carlton may be small in size, but it boasts one of the highest concentrations of tasting rooms in the state — many of which are tucked along its easily walkable streets. With the short drive to Dundee, we recommend grabbing a ride share to Carlton, as this is a walking tour so no driving is required between stops. Beyond that, we think distancing yourself, even from your car, adds to the “I’m on vacation” mode that we aim for here in wine country. The Carlton Sip & Stroll Package is a curated experience designed to help our guests soak up this delightful corner of our region. For just $125 (a discounted price available to Dundee Hotel guests only) you’ll enjoy a tasting experience for two at three tasting rooms of your choice. Now, if you’ve never been to Carlton, it is an absolute gem that has transformed in recent years into one of Oregon’s most exciting wine destinations — all while keeping its small-town charm. The downtown is lined with tasting rooms, boutiques, cafes, and cozy spots to grab a bite. And the overall vibe is cheerful and welcoming, offering a true sense of community. Add to that its walkability, it’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon sipping and strolling — exactly what this package was designed for. Just keep in mind that we need at least 72 hours notice to book, so make sure to find this package on our website whenever you reserve your room online, or express your interest in the Sip and Stroll package if you’re booking with us via phone. We’ll handle the planning, and you do the sipping. Time for some details!

The Wineries to Choose From:

  • Flâneur Wines
  • Marshall Davis Winery
  • Violet Vines
  • K&M Wines
  • Cana’s Feast Winery
  • Tendril Wine Cellars
  • Bull Run Distillery (yes, spirits too!)

Now, let’s dive a little deeper…

Flâneur Wines

First, let’s start with a name that says it all: Flâneur. The French word flâneur describes someone who strolls leisurely, observing and appreciating life without hurry or agenda. That spirit is beautifully embodied by Flâneur Wines, which invites guests to slow down, savor, and be present with each glass. Founded in 2013 by Marty Doerschlag, Flâneur is known for its elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from estate vineyards in the Chehalem Mountains and Ribbon Ridge AVAs. Housed in a beautifully restored grain elevator from 1890 (one of the most iconic buildings in Carlton), the tasting room blends history with a modern, laid-back energy. You’ll find yourself wanting to linger — and that’s entirely the point.

Marshall Davis Winery

A small, family-run winery with big accolades, Marshall Davis is all about small-batch precision and a hands-on approach. Brothers Sean and Ryan Davis, along with winemaker Marshall (yes, that’s where the name comes from), focus on crafting Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah that showcase the best of the Willamette Valley. But what makes Marshall Davis particularly special? The personal touch. It’s not uncommon to meet one of the Davis brothers during your tasting and hear firsthand about the vineyard, vintage, and winemaking process. Plus, the wines themselves are expressive, polished, and consistently well reviewed. A stop here feels like discovering a local secret, but one we’re happy to share.

Violet Vines

If you like a tasting room with a playful flair, you’ll love Violet Vines. This newcomer to Carlton has quickly gained a following not only for its wines, but also its fun and welcoming energy. One of the highlights? Ask to take their signature “Wine Personality Quiz” — a lighthearted way to discover your perfect pour based on your preferences, hobbies, and tastes. The wines themselves lean bold and lush, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and other big reds rounding out the lineup: a sometimes rare collection for the area. But don’t worry white wine lovers, there are still plenty of options to choose from, and
who doesn’t love something light, cool, and refreshing during the summer? The tasting space is chic yet relaxed, making it an inviting stop when your feel like experiencing something new.

K&M Wines

Walking into K&M Wines feels a bit like stepping into a friend’s artful, well-stocked home — and that’s entirely by design. Owners Ken and Mauro (hence K&M) have created a space where local wine, art, and hospitality converge. Their portfolio includes classic Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay, but don’t miss their sweeter-style rosé, which regulars rave about (and by regulars, we mean first and foremost us) — it’s refreshing, fruit-forward, and perfect for sunny afternoons. Beyond the wines, you’ll find an array of handmade goods from local artisans, including cutting boards, jewelry, home goods, and more. It’s the kind of place where you might discover a bottle and a beautiful gift to take home.

Cana’s Feast Winery

Italian-inspired and Oregon-rooted, Cana’s Feast offers a tasting experience that transports you across the ocean — no passport required. Known for crafting Old World-style reds such as Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, and Barbera, Cana’s Feast brings a deliciously different dimension to the Carlton wine scene. The tasting room is both elegant and laid-back, with a welcoming patio space perfect for lingering over a glass (or two). Pair your tasting with some of their artisan snacks and imagine yourself at a rustic villa in Tuscany — right here in Oregon.

Tendril Wine Cellars

For wine lovers excited about craftsmanship, Tendril is a must-visit. Founded by Tony Rynders, former head winemaker at Domaine Serene, Tendril is a boutique label focused on meticulous, age-worthy Pinot Noir. This is a place where Oregon-specific terroir shines, as each wine tells a different story, from the flagship Extrovert Pinot Noir, to the lush Pretender Chardonnay. Tastings here are both personal and educational, with an emphasis on artistry and nuance. If you want to understand why Oregon Pinot Noir has earned its stellar reputation, Tendril offers a master class in the glass.

Bull Run Distillery

Spirits lovers, rejoice! Not every stop on the Sip & Stroll Package is wine-focused. Bull Run Distillery brings exceptional whiskey, vodka, and gin to the mix, making it a fun and flavorful way to round out your afternoon. Known for its small-batch, grain-to-glass approach, Bull Run crafts spirits with strong character and depth. The tasting room offers both flights and seasonal cocktails (which we always recommend checking out), plus bottles to take home as gifts for friends or your own later enjoyment. Fun fact: Bull Run takes its name from the Bull Run watershed, a primary source of drinking water for Portland, Oregon: a nod to the pure, soft water that plays a key role in their spirit-making.

Some Things To Keep In Mind:

To make the most of your Sip & Stroll adventure, here are a few helpful tips:

1. Give yourself plenty of time.

Don’t rush. Part of the beauty of this package is the chance to stroll at your own pace
and enjoy each tasting room fully. Carlton’s tasting rooms often encourage lingering,
chatting, and exploring.

2. Plan for a meal.

After tasting, grab lunch or dinner in Carlton before heading home. Horseradish,
Blind Pig, and Park & Main are all great local dining choices, but there’s no shortage
of available options, so feel free to explore!

3. Rideshare is your friend.

Even though Carlton is less than 20 minutes away, it’s always smart to plan ahead
for a safe ride home. Calling a rideshare or arranging a driver allows everyone to
relax and enjoy the full experience.

4. Don’t forget to ask what else is open!

Many tasting rooms occasionally open special bottles or offer library wines not on
the official tasting list — all you have to do is ask. This is a great way to discover
something unexpected and expand your palate!
